Sunday night Anja was playing with friends, running around in the driveway. While she was running around, she somehow cut her foot on the external fireplace vent (sheet metal). Denver started cleaning it up, but realized that it was really deep and probably needed stitches. Trying to calm Anja (she freaked out a bit when she heard the word stitches), he told her that they could probably use the special glue to glue it together. We all jumped in the car and headed to the closest Instacare, but found out it isn't open on Sundays. We then travelled on to the Emergency Room. The attending nurse confirmed our suspicions that Anja would need 3 or 4 stitches. (Again, more freaking out from Anja.) They put some numbing topical gel on her foot and had us wait about 30 minutes. Then they took us back to prepare her foot for the stitches. They had her connected to a monitor to check her heart rate. It was funny because every time she started freaking out, the heart monitor would start beeping faster and faster. The topical gel didn't completely numb the foot, so she got a few more shots (insert screaming here). We are not sure if Anja was able to feel the stitches or just the pressure, but she continued to scream and cry while the stitches were being done. We all thought she would pass out from the fast and shallow breathing she was doing. They actually made her stay lying down for a few minutes after they were done to make sure she didn't get sick. I didn't see the stitches until today, when I removed the dressing to redo it. I was shocked to see so many stitches. The whole time the doctor was doing the stitches, I kept thinking, "How long can three or four stitches take?" (It took quit a while to do them.) Now I realize that it took that long because it wasn't 3-4 stitches. She is quite the trooper!
